Learn Finnish words that you actually need
Finnish has no gender, no articles and no future tense, and it spends the saved effort on fifteen cases and words that change shape when you touch them. Word Trainer keeps the words you meet in Finland, from the tax office to the supermarket, and brings each one back with its forms until they are yours.
What makes Finnish vocabulary tricky
Nouns take fifteen cases, and the stem often changes with them: katu (street) becomes kadulla (on the street), kauppa (shop) becomes kaupassa (in the shop). Consonant gradation, kk to k, pp to p, t to d, makes the word you hear look different from the one you learned.
Vowel harmony decides the endings: talossa but kylässä. Words are long because they are built from parts: kahvinkeitin (coffee maker), työttömyysturva (unemployment security). Once you know the parts, they read themselves.
Spoken Finnish (puhekieli) shortens almost everything: minä becomes mä, sinä becomes sä, olen becomes oon. The textbook form and the street form are both vocabulary.
How Word Trainer helps with Finnish
Word Trainer has no ready-made Finnish deck. Your dictionary is the list of words you decided to learn: from your course, your textbook, your job, the shop on the corner. Type them, paste a whole list, photograph a page or, on Android, share text from another app, and the missing translations fill in automatically.
Every word then goes through the full cycle. The Learn tab shows it next to its translation and hides more of its letters at each level until you recall the whole word. Flashcards follow, and then training: you type or say the translation, and spaced repetition decides when the word comes back. Words you get wrong return sooner, words you know fade to rare refreshers.
The app pronounces every Finnish word with a natural voice, plays your list as an audio playlist in Listen mode, and in hands-free mode listens to your spoken Finnish and checks it, so you can train on a walk with nothing in your hands.
Three tips for your Finnish entries
- Add a case form you met as its own entry, next to the noun itself: 'kauppa' and 'kaupassa'. Gradation sticks better from real pairs than from rules.
- Add the spoken form as its own entry when you hear it: 'mä', 'oon', 'tuutko'. That is the Finnish people will actually say to you.
- Add compound words whole and let their parts come with them: 'ruokakauppa', 'terveyskeskus'.
A few Finnish words worth adding
| Word | In English | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| kiitos | thank you | Also 'please' in many situations |
| kauppa | shop | ruokakauppa: grocery shop; kaupassa: in the shop |
| terveyskeskus | health centre | terveys + keskus: health + centre |
| ajanvaraus | appointment booking | ajan + varaus: time + reservation |
| sauna | sauna | The one Finnish word you already knew |
| no niin | well then, okay, right | The phrase that starts and ends everything |
Learn Finnish from any language

Frequently asked questions
Is Finnish vocabulary really that hard?
The words are unfamiliar, since Finnish is not related to English, German or the Slavic languages, so almost nothing comes for free. The upside is regularity: spelling matches pronunciation almost exactly, stress is always on the first syllable, and long words are built from shorter ones, so each word you learn makes the long ones easier. Spaced repetition matters more here than in a related language, because there are few cognates to lean on. Word Trainer brings each word back on schedule and lets you hear it with a Finnish voice every time.
Can I use the word list from my Finnish course or textbook?
Yes. Paste the list into Bulk import, one word per line or 'word - translation' pairs, or photograph the page: the pairs are recognized and the missing translations are filled in. Folders keep the lessons apart, and you can train one folder or everything at once.
Does the app pronounce Finnish words?
Yes. Every word in the Learn tab, in the list and on the flashcards, has a play button with a natural Finnish voice, Auto-speak pronounces the words during training, Listen mode plays your whole list as a playlist, and hands-free mode understands your spoken Finnish answers.
