Learn Dutch words that you actually need
Dutch is close to English until it is not: the words look familiar, the sounds do not, and the sentence puts the verb where you least expect it. Word Trainer keeps the words from your course, your work and the supermarket in one list and trains them until they come out on their own.
What makes Dutch vocabulary tricky
Two articles, de and het, and no general rule for which noun takes which: de tafel, het raam. Adjectives change with the article: een grote tafel, een groot raam. The only working method is to learn every noun with its article.
The g and ch sounds, the ui and eu vowels and long compound words take time: ziektekostenverzekering is one word for health insurance. Diminutives are everywhere: een biertje, een momentje, een kopje koffie.
Separable verbs split, and the prefix goes to the end: opbellen becomes 'ik bel je morgen op'. False friends with English wait at every corner: eventueel means possibly, not eventually; brutaal means rude.
How Word Trainer helps with Dutch
Word Trainer has no ready-made Dutch deck. Your dictionary is the list of words you decided to learn: from your course, your textbook, your job, the shop on the corner. Type them, paste a whole list, photograph a page or, on Android, share text from another app, and the missing translations fill in automatically.
Every word then goes through the full cycle. The Learn tab shows it next to its translation and hides more of its letters at each level until you recall the whole word. Flashcards follow, and then training: you type or say the translation, and spaced repetition decides when the word comes back. Words you get wrong return sooner, words you know fade to rare refreshers.
The app pronounces every Dutch word with a natural voice, plays your list as an audio playlist in Listen mode, and in hands-free mode listens to your spoken Dutch and checks it, so you can train on a walk with nothing in your hands.
Three tips for your Dutch entries
- Add nouns as 'de tafel' and 'het raam', never bare. The article is part of the word in Dutch.
- Add the diminutive you hear as its own entry: 'een biertje'. It is what people actually say.
- Add separable verbs in a short sentence: 'ik bel je op', 'we gaan mee'.
A few Dutch words worth adding
| Word | In English | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| de afspraak | appointment | Doctor, municipality, dentist |
| gezellig | cosy, convivial | The word every guide calls untranslatable |
| de gemeente | municipality | Where you register and pay for the bins |
| lekker | tasty, nice | Food, weather, sleep, anything good |
| de boodschappen | groceries | boodschappen doen: to do the shopping |
| even | just, for a moment | The small word in every request |
Learn Dutch from any language
Word Trainer supports 17 languages in any pair, in both directions. Learn Dutch from English, Spanish, German, Ukrainian or any of the others, and the interface itself is available in 16 languages, so you can use the app in your own language while you learn Dutch.
Frequently asked questions
How do I learn de and het?
By never learning a noun without its article. In Word Trainer type 'de fiets' and 'het huis' as the entry, and whenever you answer in Dutch, the trainer expects the article too. A couple of rules help at the edges: diminutives with -je are always het, and plurals are always de. For the rest, repetition builds the habit faster than any list of exceptions.
Can I use the word list from my Dutch course or textbook?
Yes. Paste the list into Bulk import, one word per line or 'word - translation' pairs, or photograph the page: the pairs are recognized and the missing translations are filled in. Folders keep the lessons apart, and you can train one folder or everything at once.
Does the app pronounce Dutch words?
Yes. Every word in the Learn tab, in the list and on the flashcards, has a play button with a natural Dutch voice, Auto-speak pronounces the words during training, Listen mode plays your whole list as a playlist, and hands-free mode understands your spoken Dutch answers.
Is Word Trainer free?
