Word Trainer

Learn English words that you actually need

English is everywhere, which is exactly why the words you need are not the ones in the standard lists: they are the ones from your job, your studies, your city and the series you watch. Word Trainer keeps that list and trains it with spaced repetition, a natural English voice and a hands-free mode that understands your spoken English.

What makes English vocabulary tricky

Spelling and sound went separate ways centuries ago: though, through, tough and thought share letters and nothing else. A word learned from the page can be a stranger when it is spoken.

Phrasal verbs are everywhere in everyday speech, and the particle changes the meaning: put off, put up with, put on, put down. Collocations decide what sounds right: you make a decision and do your homework, pay attention and tell the truth.

There are often two words for one thing, a short everyday one and a long formal one: buy and purchase, start and commence, help and assist. Knowing which one fits the situation is part of the vocabulary.

How Word Trainer helps with English

Word Trainer has no ready-made English deck. Your dictionary is the list of words you decided to learn: from your course, your textbook, your job, the shop on the corner. Type them, paste a whole list, photograph a page or, on Android, share text from another app, and the missing translations fill in automatically.

Every word then goes through the full cycle. The Learn tab shows it next to its translation and hides more of its letters at each level until you recall the whole word. Flashcards follow, and then training: you type or say the translation, and spaced repetition decides when the word comes back. Words you get wrong return sooner, words you know fade to rare refreshers.

The app pronounces every English word with a natural voice, plays your list as an audio playlist in Listen mode, and in hands-free mode listens to your spoken English and checks it, so you can train on a walk with nothing in your hands.

Three tips for your English entries

  • Add phrasal verbs as entries with an object: 'look after the kids', 'pick up the phone'. The phrase is the unit, not the verb.
  • Add collocations as you meet them: 'make a decision', 'heavy rain', 'strong coffee'.
  • Keep Auto-speak on and use hands-free mode: English spelling will not tell you how a word sounds, but the voice will.

Frequently asked questions

I already know a lot of English. What should I add?

The words you understand but never use, and the ones you keep looking up. Passive vocabulary is huge for most learners; the gap is in active use. Add the phrasal verbs and collocations from your work and your series, the formal words from the emails you receive, and train them until they come out on their own. Hands-free mode is the closest thing to a conversation you can have alone.

Can I use the word list from my English course or textbook?

Yes. Paste the list into Bulk import, one word per line or 'word - translation' pairs, or photograph the page: the pairs are recognized and the missing translations are filled in. Folders keep the lessons apart, and you can train one folder or everything at once.

Does the app pronounce English words?

Yes. Every word in the Learn tab, in the list and on the flashcards, has a play button with a natural English voice, Auto-speak pronounces the words during training, Listen mode plays your whole list as a playlist, and hands-free mode understands your spoken English answers.
