Learn French words that you actually need
French sounds like one long word, and that is the first problem: you know the word from the page and still miss it on the street. Word Trainer keeps the words you hear and read in one place and lets you train them by eye, by hand and by ear, with a natural French voice.
What makes French vocabulary tricky
Spelling and sound go separate ways: the final letters of petit, grand or trop are silent, and then they suddenly return in liaison: les amis, un petit ami. A word learned only from the page is easy to miss when it is spoken.
Nouns are masculine or feminine, and the article usually tells you which: le livre, la table, but l'arbre and l'eau hide it. Adjectives agree with them, and many everyday words come in a masculine and a feminine form: boulanger, boulangère.
English speakers meet false friends daily: actuellement means currently, une librairie is a bookshop, and demander is simply to ask. Tu and vous are a vocabulary question too: the verb changes with the level of politeness.
How Word Trainer helps with French
Word Trainer has no ready-made French deck. Your dictionary is the list of words you decided to learn: from your course, your textbook, your job, the shop on the corner. Type them, paste a whole list, photograph a page or, on Android, share text from another app, and the missing translations fill in automatically.
Every word then goes through the full cycle. The Learn tab shows it next to its translation and hides more of its letters at each level until you recall the whole word. Flashcards follow, and then training: you type or say the translation, and spaced repetition decides when the word comes back. Words you get wrong return sooner, words you know fade to rare refreshers.
The app pronounces every French word with a natural voice, plays your list as an audio playlist in Listen mode, and in hands-free mode listens to your spoken French and checks it, so you can train on a walk with nothing in your hands.
Three tips for your French entries
- Add nouns with the article: 'le rendez-vous', 'la boulangerie', and use un or une before a vowel, where l' hides the gender: 'un hôpital', 'une adresse'.
- Keep Auto-speak on in training and play your words in Listen mode: hearing 'beaucoup' is how you stop reading the p.
- Add polite phrases as entries: 'je voudrais', 'est-ce que vous avez'. They are the first thing you will say in a shop.
A few French words worth adding
| Word | In English | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| le rendez-vous | appointment | Doctor, prefecture, hairdresser |
| la boulangerie | bakery | Fresh bread every day, and your first order in French |
| le courrier | mail, post | Letters, bills and the official answers you are waiting for |
| le justificatif | supporting document | Proof of address, proof of income, proof of everything |
| en fait | actually | The filler you will hear in every sentence |
| la caisse | checkout, till | Where you learn the numbers for real |
Learn French from any language
Word Trainer supports 17 languages in any pair, in both directions. Learn French from English, Spanish, German, Ukrainian or any of the others, and the interface itself is available in 16 languages, so you can use the app in your own language while you learn French.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get French pronunciation right when I learn words alone?
Hear every word as you learn it. In Word Trainer every word in the Learn tab, in the list and on the flashcards, has a play button with a natural French voice, Auto-speak pronounces the words during training, Listen mode plays your whole list, and hands-free mode makes you say the words and be understood. Add the article and a short phrase to each noun, so liaison and the silent letters come with the word.
Can I use the word list from my French course or textbook?
Yes. Paste the list into Bulk import, one word per line or 'word - translation' pairs, or photograph the page: the pairs are recognized and the missing translations are filled in. Folders keep the lessons apart, and you can train one folder or everything at once.
Does the app pronounce French words?
Yes. Every word in the Learn tab, in the list and on the flashcards, has a play button with a natural French voice, Auto-speak pronounces the words during training, Listen mode plays your whole list as a playlist, and hands-free mode understands your spoken French answers.
