Word Trainer

Learn Romanian words that you actually need

Romanian is a Romance language with a Slavic accent in its vocabulary: pâine and apă sit next to prieten and a iubi. Word Trainer keeps the Romanian words from your course, your work and your block in one list and trains them by eye, by hand and by ear.

What makes Romanian vocabulary tricky

The definite article is attached to the end of the noun: om, omul; casă, casa; copil, copilul. There are three genders, and the neuter behaves like masculine in the singular and feminine in the plural: un tren, două trenuri.

Nouns and adjectives still have cases, mostly visible in the genitive and dative: casa prietenului, the friend's house. The letter ă sounds like the a in English 'about', â and î spell a single sound that English does not have, and ș and ț are separate letters, not decorated s and t.

Much of the everyday vocabulary comes from Slavic, Hungarian, Greek and other sources, so knowledge of French or Italian helps with many words and does nothing for the rest: da means yes, a plăti is to pay, prieten is friend.

How Word Trainer helps with Romanian

Word Trainer has no ready-made Romanian deck. Your dictionary is the list of words you decided to learn: from your course, your textbook, your job, the shop on the corner. Type them, paste a whole list, photograph a page or, on Android, share text from another app, and the missing translations fill in automatically.

Every word then goes through the full cycle. The Learn tab shows it next to its translation and hides more of its letters at each level until you recall the whole word. Flashcards follow, and then training: you type or say the translation, and spaced repetition decides when the word comes back. Words you get wrong return sooner, words you know fade to rare refreshers.

The app pronounces every Romanian word with a natural voice, plays your list as an audio playlist in Listen mode, and in hands-free mode listens to your spoken Romanian and checks it, so you can train on a walk with nothing in your hands.

Three tips for your Romanian entries

  • Add the noun without and with the article attached, as two entries: 'un prieten' and 'prietenul'. The ending is the article, and each form comes back on its own.
  • Type ă, â, î, ș and ț exactly: some words differ only by these letters, like peste (over) and pește (fish), and the voice reads each word as written.
  • Use Listen mode: the vowels ă and â are learned by ear, and the playlist gives you dozens of examples on a walk.

Frequently asked questions

Does knowing Italian, Spanish or French help with Romanian words?

With a good part of them, yes: the grammar and much of the core vocabulary are Romance. But hundreds of everyday words come from other sources, and many of them are among the first you meet: da, prieten, a iubi, a plăti, ceas. Add them as they come, and let the spaced repetition schedule treat them like any other word: the trainer does not care where a word comes from, only whether you remember it.

Can I use the word list from my Romanian course or textbook?

Yes. Paste the list into Bulk import, one word per line or 'word - translation' pairs, or photograph the page: the pairs are recognized and the missing translations are filled in. Folders keep the lessons apart, and you can train one folder or everything at once.

Does the app pronounce Romanian words?

Yes. Every word in the Learn tab, in the list and on the flashcards, has a play button with a natural Romanian voice, Auto-speak pronounces the words during training, Listen mode plays your whole list as a playlist, and hands-free mode understands your spoken Romanian answers.
