Word Trainer

Learn Portuguese words that you actually need

European Portuguese is compact, fast and full of swallowed vowels: the word you read as 'telefone' arrives at your ear as something closer to 'tlefon'. Word Trainer keeps a Portuguese dictionary that is European by design, with the words, translations and voice of Portugal rather than Brazil, and trains it by eye, by hand and by ear.

What makes Portuguese vocabulary tricky

Unstressed vowels almost disappear in speech, so words you know from the page are hard to catch in a café. Hearing the words you learn is not optional in Portuguese; it is half of the vocabulary.

Nouns have gender, articles contract with prepositions (do, na, pelo), and in plain statements object pronouns follow the verb with a hyphen: chamo-me, dá-me, but não me chamo. The tu form is alive and used with friends; with strangers people say o senhor or a senhora, or use the verb alone, because você can sound blunt.

Many everyday words differ from Brazilian Portuguese: autocarro and comboio for bus and train, pequeno-almoço for breakfast, telemóvel for mobile phone. A word list from the wrong variant costs you real conversations.

How Word Trainer helps with Portuguese

Word Trainer has no ready-made Portuguese deck. Your dictionary is the list of words you decided to learn: from your course, your textbook, your job, the shop on the corner. Type them, paste a whole list, photograph a page or, on Android, share text from another app, and the missing translations fill in automatically.

Every word then goes through the full cycle. The Learn tab shows it next to its translation and hides more of its letters at each level until you recall the whole word. Flashcards follow, and then training: you type or say the translation, and spaced repetition decides when the word comes back. Words you get wrong return sooner, words you know fade to rare refreshers.

The app pronounces every Portuguese word with a natural voice, plays your list as an audio playlist in Listen mode, and in hands-free mode listens to your spoken Portuguese and checks it, so you can train on a walk with nothing in your hands.

Three tips for your Portuguese entries

  • Pick Portuguese (Portugal) as your language in Word Trainer: it is separate from Brazilian, with its own translations and voice.
  • Add nouns with the article and verbs with their pronouns as you hear them: 'o autocarro', 'chamo-me'.
  • Play your words in Listen mode every day. The swallowed vowels are learned by ear, and the playlist gives your ear plenty of them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I learn European Portuguese with material made for Brazil?

Grammar and most words carry over, but pronunciation, everyday vocabulary and pronoun usage differ noticeably. Keep the words you meet in Portugal in a Portuguese (Portugal) dictionary, and when a Brazilian source gives you a different word, add the one you actually hear. Word Trainer keeps the two variants apart, so they never mix in one list.

Can I use the word list from my Portuguese course or textbook?

Yes. Paste the list into Bulk import, one word per line or 'word - translation' pairs, or photograph the page: the pairs are recognized and the missing translations are filled in. Folders keep the lessons apart, and you can train one folder or everything at once.

Does the app pronounce Portuguese words?

Yes. Every word in the Learn tab, in the list and on the flashcards, has a play button with a natural Portuguese voice, Auto-speak pronounces the words during training, Listen mode plays your whole list as a playlist, and hands-free mode understands your spoken Portuguese answers.

Is Word Trainer free?

There is a free plan with everything you need to learn: a dictionary of up to 150 words, training, and the Learn tab with flashcards and listening. Hands-free voice practice, word recognition from photos and translation come with monthly allowances, the paid plans raise them and remove the word limit, and Pro adds detailed progress.
