Learn Bulgarian words that you actually need
Bulgarian is a Slavic language that dropped almost all of its cases and kept everything else interesting: a definite article that hangs on the end of the word, a verb system with more tenses than most, and a Cyrillic alphabet of its own. Word Trainer keeps the words from your course, your work and your street in one list and trains them until the endings come naturally.
What makes Bulgarian vocabulary tricky
Nouns have lost the case endings of most other Slavic languages and keep only a vocative for calling someone (Иване, мамо), but the definite article is a suffix: град, градът; жена, жената; дете, детето. The same noun looks different with and without it, and both forms are vocabulary.
Verbs have aspect pairs and a rich set of tenses, including forms for events you did not witness yourself. The infinitive does not exist: dictionaries list verbs in the first person, and 'I want to go' is искам да отида.
Stress is not marked and not predictable, and it changes the meaning: вълна with the stress on the first syllable is wool, on the second it is a wave. Reading a word is not the same as knowing how to say it.
How Word Trainer helps with Bulgarian
Word Trainer has no ready-made Bulgarian deck. Your dictionary is the list of words you decided to learn: from your course, your textbook, your job, the shop on the corner. Type them, paste a whole list, photograph a page or, on Android, share text from another app, and the missing translations fill in automatically.
Every word then goes through the full cycle. The Learn tab shows it next to its translation and hides more of its letters at each level until you recall the whole word. Flashcards follow, and then training: you type or say the translation, and spaced repetition decides when the word comes back. Words you get wrong return sooner, words you know fade to rare refreshers.
The app pronounces every Bulgarian word with a natural voice, plays your list as an audio playlist in Listen mode, and in hands-free mode listens to your spoken Bulgarian and checks it, so you can train on a walk with nothing in your hands.
Three tips for your Bulgarian entries
- Add the noun and its form with the article as two entries: 'град' and 'градът'. Each comes back on its own, and the suffix stops being a surprise.
- Add verbs as you hear them, in the first person, and add a phrase with да: 'искам да отида'.
- Keep Auto-speak on and play your list in Listen mode: the stress lives in the voice, not on the page.
A few Bulgarian words worth adding
| Word | In English | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| благодаря | thank you | Stress on the last syllable; 'мерси' on the street |
| апартамент | flat, apartment | апартаментът: the flat, with the article |
| среща | meeting | имам среща: I have a meeting; a doctor's appointment is час |
| магазин | shop | хранителен магазин: grocery shop |
| община | municipality | Where you register an address |
| айде | come on, let's go, bye | One word for a dozen moments |
Learn Bulgarian from any language

Frequently asked questions
Is Bulgarian easier than other Slavic languages?
In one way, clearly: nouns do not change for case, so each noun has only a few forms to learn. In return the verbs are richer, and the stress has to be learned word by word. If you know another Slavic language, many roots are familiar, which speeds up reading but hides false friends: стол is a chair here, not a table as in most other Slavic languages; булка is a bride, not a bun. Add the false friends to your dictionary, in a folder of their own if you like; spaced repetition treats them like any other word.
Can I use the word list from my Bulgarian course or textbook?
Yes. Paste the list into Bulk import, one word per line or 'word - translation' pairs, or photograph the page: the pairs are recognized and the missing translations are filled in. Folders keep the lessons apart, and you can train one folder or everything at once.
Does the app pronounce Bulgarian words?
Yes. Every word in the Learn tab, in the list and on the flashcards, has a play button with a natural Bulgarian voice, Auto-speak pronounces the words during training, Listen mode plays your whole list as a playlist, and hands-free mode understands your spoken Bulgarian answers.
