Learn Brazilian Portuguese words that you actually need

Brazilian Portuguese is spoken by more than two hundred million people, and many of its everyday words are its own: ônibus, celular, café da manhã. Word Trainer keeps a separate Brazilian dictionary, so the words you learn are the words you will hear in São Paulo, Recife or Porto Alegre, not their European cousins.

What makes Brazilian Portuguese vocabulary tricky

Nouns have gender, and the articles contract with prepositions: de + a = da, em + o = no, a + a = à. A phrase like 'no carro' hides two words in one.

Sounds move a long way from the spelling: in most accents the final -e sounds like 'i', t and d soften before an 'i' sound (tia, dia, leite, cidade), and nasal diphthongs as in pão, mãe and bem have no equivalent in most languages.

Verbs have many forms, and the ones you hear are not always the ones in the book: você takes the third person, and the gerund is used all the time: 'estou fazendo'. Some words differ from European Portuguese entirely: trem, not comboio; ônibus, not autocarro.

How Word Trainer helps with Brazilian Portuguese

Word Trainer has no ready-made Brazilian Portuguese deck. Your dictionary is the list of words you decided to learn: from your course, your textbook, your job, the shop on the corner. Type them, paste a whole list, photograph a page or, on Android, share text from another app, and the missing translations fill in automatically.

Every word then goes through the full cycle. The Learn tab shows it next to its translation and hides more of its letters at each level until you recall the whole word. Flashcards follow, and then training: you type or say the translation, and spaced repetition decides when the word comes back. Words you get wrong return sooner, words you know fade to rare refreshers.

The app pronounces every Brazilian Portuguese word with a natural voice, plays your list as an audio playlist in Listen mode, and in hands-free mode listens to your spoken Brazilian Portuguese and checks it, so you can train on a walk with nothing in your hands.

Three tips for your Brazilian Portuguese entries

  • Pick Brazilian Portuguese as your language in Word Trainer: it treats Brazilian and European Portuguese as two languages, so the translations and the voice match the variant you learn.
  • Add nouns with the article: 'o ônibus', 'a padaria'. Add the contraction when you meet it: 'no ponto de ônibus'.
  • Use Listen mode with the Brazilian voice: the nasal vowels and the soft t and d have to be heard before they can be said.

Frequently asked questions

Should I learn Brazilian or European Portuguese?

The one spoken where you live or by the people you talk to. They share most of the language, but everyday words, pronunciation and the way verbs are used differ enough that mixing them sounds odd. Word Trainer has both as separate languages, with their own translations and voices, so pick Brazilian here and switch the dictionary if life takes you to Lisbon.

Can I use the word list from my Brazilian Portuguese course or textbook?

Yes. Paste the list into Bulk import, one word per line or 'word - translation' pairs, or photograph the page: the pairs are recognized and the missing translations are filled in. Folders keep the lessons apart, and you can train one folder or everything at once.

Does the app pronounce Brazilian Portuguese words?

Yes. Every word in the Learn tab, in the list and on the flashcards, has a play button with a natural Brazilian Portuguese voice, Auto-speak pronounces the words during training, Listen mode plays your whole list as a playlist, and hands-free mode understands your spoken Brazilian Portuguese answers.
