Word Trainer

Learn Ukrainian words that you actually need

Ukrainian is melodic, phonetic and precise: it has seven cases, verbs in pairs, and letters of its own inside the Cyrillic alphabet. Word Trainer keeps the words from your course, your work and your street in one dictionary and brings each one back on schedule, with a Ukrainian voice for the sounds.

What makes Ukrainian vocabulary tricky

Seven cases, including a vocative that is used with every name: Оксано, Андрію. Nouns, adjectives and pronouns change their endings: Київ, у Києві, з Києва.

The alphabet has letters most other Cyrillic alphabets lack: і, ї, є and ґ, and the letter г stands for a voiced h-like sound, while g as in 'go' is written ґ. Reading is regular once these are known, but the stress is not marked, can fall on any syllable and sometimes moves between forms: рука, руку.

Verbs come in aspect pairs (робити and зробити), and the alternation of vowels and consonants changes the look of a word between forms: ніс and носа, рука and руці. The dictionary form is only the first one.

How Word Trainer helps with Ukrainian

Word Trainer has no ready-made Ukrainian deck. Your dictionary is the list of words you decided to learn: from your course, your textbook, your job, the shop on the corner. Type them, paste a whole list, photograph a page or, on Android, share text from another app, and the missing translations fill in automatically.

Every word then goes through the full cycle. The Learn tab shows it next to its translation and hides more of its letters at each level until you recall the whole word. Flashcards follow, and then training: you type or say the translation, and spaced repetition decides when the word comes back. Words you get wrong return sooner, words you know fade to rare refreshers.

The app pronounces every Ukrainian word with a natural voice, plays your list as an audio playlist in Listen mode, and in hands-free mode listens to your spoken Ukrainian and checks it, so you can train on a walk with nothing in your hands.

Three tips for your Ukrainian entries

  • Add both verbs of an aspect pair as separate entries in the same folder, so you can train the pairs as one set: 'робити', 'зробити'.
  • Add short phrases with a case ending: 'у місті', 'без цукру', 'з другом'. Phrases teach cases faster than tables.
  • Type і, ї, є and ґ exactly as the word is spelled: one letter can make a different word, like ґрати (bars) and грати (to play).

Frequently asked questions

How different is Ukrainian from the other Slavic languages?

Close enough that many roots are recognizable, far enough that guessing gets you into trouble. Ukrainian shares a lot with Polish (дякую and dziękuję, чекати and czekać) and has false friends with every neighbour. Learn each word as Ukrainian, in its own spelling with і, ї, є and ґ, and hear it with a Ukrainian voice; spaced repetition then separates the words you actually know from the ones you only recognize.

Can I use the word list from my Ukrainian course or textbook?

Yes. Paste the list into Bulk import, one word per line or 'word - translation' pairs, or photograph the page: the pairs are recognized and the missing translations are filled in. Folders keep the lessons apart, and you can train one folder or everything at once.

Does the app pronounce Ukrainian words?

Yes. Every word in the Learn tab, in the list and on the flashcards, has a play button with a natural Ukrainian voice, Auto-speak pronounces the words during training, Listen mode plays your whole list as a playlist, and hands-free mode understands your spoken Ukrainian answers.
