Learn Russian words that you actually need
Russian has six cases, verbs that come in pairs, and a stress that moves and is not marked in ordinary text. What it also has is a Cyrillic alphabet you can learn in an evening and a vocabulary that opens up the moment you know a few hundred roots. Word Trainer keeps the words from your course, your work and your street and brings each one back until it stays.
What makes Russian vocabulary tricky
Six cases change nouns, adjectives and pronouns: работа, на работе, с работы. The word you learn from the dictionary is one of its forms, and in real sentences you often hear the others.
Verbs come in aspect pairs, one for a process or a repeated action and one for a completed result: делать and сделать, читать and прочитать. Verbs of motion add their own layer: идти and ходить both mean to go on foot, but идти is movement in one direction, often right now, and ходить is there and back, a habit or walking around.
Stress is not marked in normal text and can move between forms: рука, руку, руки. Soft and hard consonants, marked by the letters that follow, change words: мат and мать. Reading a word right needs hearing it.
How Word Trainer helps with Russian
Word Trainer has no ready-made Russian deck. Your dictionary is the list of words you decided to learn: from your course, your textbook, your job, the shop on the corner. Type them, paste a whole list, photograph a page or, on Android, share text from another app, and the missing translations fill in automatically.
Every word then goes through the full cycle. The Learn tab shows it next to its translation and hides more of its letters at each level until you recall the whole word. Flashcards follow, and then training: you type or say the translation, and spaced repetition decides when the word comes back. Words you get wrong return sooner, words you know fade to rare refreshers.
The app pronounces every Russian word with a natural voice, plays your list as an audio playlist in Listen mode, and in hands-free mode listens to your spoken Russian and checks it, so you can train on a walk with nothing in your hands.
Three tips for your Russian entries
- Add both verbs of an aspect pair as separate entries in the same folder, so you can train the pairs as one set: 'делать', 'сделать'.
- Add a short phrase with a case ending when you meet one: 'в магазине', 'без сахара'. Cases become habit through phrases.
- Keep Auto-speak on and use Listen mode: stress and soft consonants are learned by ear, and hands-free mode makes you say them.
A few Russian words worth adding

| справка | certificate, written confirmation | The paper an office asks for |
| магазин | shop | Stress on the last syllable, not the first |
| договориться | to agree on, to arrange | договорились: agreed, deal |
| ладно | okay, fine | The everyday agreement |
Learn Russian from any language
Word Trainer supports 17 languages in any pair, in both directions. Learn Russian from English, Spanish, German, French or any of the others, and the interface itself is available in 16 languages, so you can use the app in your own language while you learn Russian.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to learn the Cyrillic alphabet before the words?
Yes, and it takes an evening or two, not a month: most letters have one main sound, and many shapes are familiar from Latin or Greek, though some stand for different sounds: В is v, Н is n, Р is r. Learn the alphabet first, then add words in Cyrillic rather than in transliteration, so what you train is what you will read on signs and in messages. Word Trainer pronounces every word with a Russian voice, so the letters and the sounds are learned together.
Can I use the word list from my Russian course or textbook?
Yes. Paste the list into Bulk import, one word per line or 'word - translation' pairs, or photograph the page: the pairs are recognized and the missing translations are filled in. Folders keep the lessons apart, and you can train one folder or everything at once.
Does the app pronounce Russian words?
Yes. Every word in the Learn tab, in the list and on the flashcards, has a play button with a natural Russian voice, Auto-speak pronounces the words during training, Listen mode plays your whole list as a playlist, and hands-free mode understands your spoken Russian answers.
