Learn Croatian words that you actually need
Croatian is pronounced almost exactly as it is written, which is the good news, and only the stress and vowel length have to be learned by ear. The rest is seven cases, three genders and verbs that come in pairs. Word Trainer keeps the Croatian words from your course, your work and your street in one dictionary and brings each one back on schedule, with a Croatian voice for the sounds.
What makes Croatian vocabulary tricky
Seven cases change nouns, adjectives and names: Zagreb, u Zagrebu, iz Zagreba. The vocative is used every day with names and titles: Ivane, gospođo. The dictionary form is where a word starts, not where it stays.
Verbs come in aspect pairs, one for a process and one for a completed action: pisati and napisati, kupovati and kupiti. A prefix often makes a verb perfective and can change its meaning too: from pisati come napisati, prepisati (to copy) and potpisati (to sign).
Spelling follows pronunciation closely, with č, ć, dž, đ, lj, nj, š and ž as letters of their own, but stress and vowel length are not marked. The difference between č and ć is small for foreigners, and in some regions even native speakers pronounce the two almost alike, but the spelling always keeps them apart. Whether a word has ije or je, as in mlijeko and mjesto, has to be learned per word.
How Word Trainer helps with Croatian
Word Trainer has no ready-made Croatian deck. Your dictionary is the list of words you decided to learn: from your course, your textbook, your job, the shop on the corner. Type them, paste a whole list, photograph a page or, on Android, share text from another app, and the missing translations fill in automatically.
Every word then goes through the full cycle. The Learn tab shows it next to its translation and hides more of its letters at each level until you recall the whole word. Flashcards follow, and then training: you type or say the translation, and spaced repetition decides when the word comes back. Words you get wrong return sooner, words you know fade to rare refreshers.
The app pronounces every Croatian word with a natural voice, plays your list as an audio playlist in Listen mode, and in hands-free mode listens to your spoken Croatian and checks it, so you can train on a walk with nothing in your hands.
Three tips for your Croatian entries
- Add both verbs of an aspect pair as separate entries in the same folder, so you can train the pairs as one set: 'kupovati', 'kupiti'.
- Add short phrases with a case ending: 'u gradu', 'bez šećera', 's prijateljem'. That is how cases become habit.
- Type č and ć exactly and learn each word with the right one: in speech the two can sound alike, but the spelling always keeps them apart.
A few Croatian words worth adding

Learn Croatian from any language

Frequently asked questions
Can I use my Croatian words in Serbia or Bosnia?
Mostly yes: Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian are close, and speakers understand each other without effort. Some everyday words differ (kruh and hljeb or hleb for bread, tjedan and sedmica or nedelja for week), and Serbia also writes in Cyrillic. Word Trainer keeps a Croatian dictionary; add the other variant as its own entry when you hear it, in a folder of its own if you like, and your list stays honest about what you have actually met.
Can I use the word list from my Croatian course or textbook?
Yes. Paste the list into Bulk import, one word per line or 'word - translation' pairs, or photograph the page: the pairs are recognized and the missing translations are filled in. Folders keep the lessons apart, and you can train one folder or everything at once.
Does the app pronounce Croatian words?
Yes. Every word in the Learn tab, in the list and on the flashcards, has a play button with a natural Croatian voice, Auto-speak pronounces the words during training, Listen mode plays your whole list as a playlist, and hands-free mode understands your spoken Croatian answers.
